Verizon just launched free satellite messaging on the Google Pixel 9 and Galaxy S25, so I took it deep into the backcountry to see if it holds up. The system uses geostationary satellites, different from the low Earth orbit tech behind Apple and T-Mobile Starlink. I compared all three in real-world hiking conditions, testing everything from basic texting to emergency SOS scenarios.
Setup was simple. When out of cellular range, my phone prompted me to connect to a satellite using the native Android Messages app—no special software required. Aiming the phone toward the satellite, I got connected and sent texts in under a minute. I even messaged an iPhone using Apple’s satellite service to test cross-platform compatibility, and it worked seamlessly.
Verizon’s SOS function routes emergency messages to Garmin Response, the same service used by inReach devices. That’s a solid plus compared to Apple’s routing through standard 911 call centers, which aren’t always equipped for backcountry scenarios. While this setup isn’t as rugged or reliable as an inReach, for casual users heading to national parks or less remote trails, it’s a great free option.
Skylo powers the backend here, managing the satellite handoff through a clever modular system built into supported phones. It’s the same company behind devices like the Motorola Defy Satellite Link. While I wouldn’t replace my inReach for serious trips, this Verizon option is a legit tool for basic backcountry comms—especially considering the zero-dollar price tag.
