In 1958, Johannes Künzig released "Ehe sie verklingen" ("Ere they fall silent") - recordings of ethnic Germans from various former German enclaves and settlements between Central Europe and Russia. Many of these German communities had existed for centuries. Most came to an end after the gruesome events of World War II. These recordings were all made in Germany, after these people had been resettled there. Much of their culture, language, and songs did not survive relocation - their music thus allows us a glimpse into the diverse musical past of pre-national times.
