How do you sleep in 5m2?
"9m², a cramped life" / this is a historic trend that began about ten years ago: we're all living in smaller and smaller spaces. Today, the phenomenon is exploding and affecting new segments of the population. Contrary to popular belief, most tenants of maids' rooms or small apartments now have jobs. The poor or students are no longer the only ones affected, far from it! The majority of tenants are working (50%), followed by retirees (13%). For investors, the market is booming! How do they live in these tiny homes? They opened their doors to us, to show us their daily lives. At 30, Emilie has everything of a young, active woman who has everything going for her. A job as an assistant at the Ministry of Overseas Territories, a life in the best Parisian neighborhoods. Except that Emilie lives in 9m². A minimal space for this young woman on a fixed-term contract who has to go to the bathroom on the landing. Short-term contracts, temporary work, self-employment—all these new statuses are incompatible with landlords' demands, and they are all new victims of housing insecurity. Young and old share the same problem. Those on small pensions, who are currently protesting in the streets, are also being hit hard. At over 63, after a lifetime of work, Jean-Louis now finds himself living in a 19m² apartment in Marseille. These apartments are extremely profitable for investors, as the profitability of small spaces is much higher than traditional apartments. In France, more than 23,000 households even live in a room of less than 9m². Renting such spaces is illegal, but these rentals still exist. We investigated to understand how this illegal rental market was possible, what the controls are, and where they fall short.
