Dr. Joseph Zolner, Senior Director of Higher Education Programs in the Programs in Professional Education, describes COACHE as a leadership competency for college administrators in his Harvard Institutes for Higher Education (HIHE) at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Zolner also serves on COACHE's Faculty Steering Committee and National Advisory Council.
"From its somewhat humble beginnings, I think COACHE has now become a major force within the higher education community. I think there are key three areas of expertise that COACHE brings to higher education leaders. First, these strong technical skills and abilities, the quality of their analysis is first-class. Secondly, the ability to structure analysis in ways that are actionable and very tangible for participating institutions. And thirdly, to provide information to institutions in ways that both build connections across COACHE members as well as creating actionable communities of practice within institutions.
"One of the things that has always impressed me about COACHE is their ability to combine strong technical skills and very substantial people skills. They have strong quantitative capabilities and are able to develop their analysis in ways that engage senior leaders in higher education and foster important conversations that are data-driven and data-based conversations at institutions that lead to significant and substantial improvement.
"I think COACHE is fulfilling an important need within the higher education community. We all live with data. As a matter of fact, we can be swimming in data sometimes. COACHE is able to separate the wheat from the chaff and provide institutions with important, actionable information that leads to tangible improvement and progress at their institutions. They are also able to foster, through ongoing communication and contact with their institutions, a very vibrant and strong community of practice across institutions that further support the improvement over a long period of time. They are a key resource for higher education and higher education leaders today.
