The Circumetnea Narrow Gauge Railway (Ferrovia Circumetnea) is a 950mm gauge railway around the flanks of Mt Etna in Sicily, one of the largest and most active volcanoes in Europe. Opened in 1898, the line ran from Catania to Riposto, via Paternò, Adrano, Bronte & Randazzo. In June 2024, the Catania to Paternò section was closed in order to be converted to become part of the standard gauge Catania metro system.
In this first of a series of videos on the line, we will travel from Giarre to Randazzo, a distance of 39km & height difference of 711m. Our train is ADe 16 (La Terza), a 1970s designed diesel-electric railcar built by Fiat Ferroviara, TIBB & OMS, which was later rebuilt in the 2010s.
