Something as simple as connecting your mobile phone to what you think is your headphones can have unexpected consequences. This is a fun and maybe a bit overdramatized example of a badUSB attack using Bluetooth to help educate unknowing users. This attack can execute custom payloads, exfiltrate your data, impersonate your identity, send text messages, access your Gmail and many other applications.

Did you know some companies actually sell weaponized malware that can actually execute many of the attacks mentioned above with no user interaction. You don’t even need Bluetooth on with some of the new products hitting the market.

In this example we showed a phone connecting to what they think is their headphones, by accepting the pair we were then able to execute a payload through the web browser.

The last phone in this video has Renati OS and both the web browser and Bluetooth are fully removed to protect from this type of attack.

Thanks to the friendly folks over at Xtreme Custom firmware for this quick and easy demonstration using the Flipper Zero.

Stay secure and remember, awareness and education is the difference between becoming a victim and staying ahead of cyber threats.
