The easiest way to remember the Wolff-Chaikoff Effect and Jod-Basedow Phenomenon.

Wolff-Chaikoff effect is Iodine-Induced hypothyroidism. Inorganic iodine acutely reduces the synthesis and release of T4 and T3. The inhibition of thyroid hormone synthesis by iodine is known as the Wolff-Chaikoff effect. It provides temporary protection against the thyroid gland synthesizing an excessive quantity of thyroid hormones in states of excess iodine. It is a protective mechanism and a failure to escape from it can result in thyroid dysfunction. In most individuals, the decreased production of thyroid hormones is only transient and resumes after adaptation to the acute Wolff-Chaikoff effect.

Jod-Basedow Phenomenon, also known as Jod-Basedow Syndrome or iodine-induced thyrotoxicosis, is a rare cause of thyrotoxicosis that is characterized by a paradoxical phenomenon in which large loads of exogenous iodine can cause hyperthyroidism.
