Asterixis | Flapping Tremor | Liver Flap
Asterixis aka Flapping tremor or liver flap is a tremor of hand usually seen in patients with cirrhosis of liver, acute liver failure, metabolic encephalopathies, azotemia, carbon dioxide toxicity and Wilson disease. This sign is elicited by asking the patient to extend their arms and bend their hands back.
Asterixis occurs due to disorder of motor control characterized by an inability to actively maintain a position, and consequent irregular myoclonic lapses of posture. It is a type of negative myoclonus.
