Valery Legasov was a Soviet chemist and doctor of science. He worked at the Kurchatov Institute of Atomic Energy and was a member of the government commission investigating the causes and mitigating the consequences of the Chernobyl accident. Acutely feeling responsible for the disaster, Legasov considered it his duty to voice its causes, which, in his opinion, lay not only in errors in the construction and operation of the RBMK reactor, but also in the entire development of the Soviet nuclear industry. His theory was long rejected, but reactor modifications eventually began. On the second anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, the academician was found hanged in his office.
