"How Deep Is Your Love" (Bee Gees cover ) A tribute
I arranged this version of the Bee Gees song a few years back, for a charity CD to raise money for the children’s Hospice here on Isle of Man, of which Robin Gibb was a patron. It was in part a challenge to myself to play around with layering harmonies and it was recorded by Dave Armstrong at DAM Productions.
This video montage, featuring photos and video of some of my favourite places on the Isle of Man, is a tribute to my late Uncle, ‘Sir’ Bernard J Quayle, nicknamed ‘Knight of the TurnTables’ from when he was a popular radio broadcaster in the United States in the 1960s. He continued to broadcast into his 70s for Manx Radio back home on the Isle of Man, where his career originally began.
Apart from being an internationally recognised and much loved presenter, Bernie can also lay claim to the fact that he persuaded the Brothers Gibb - aka ’The Bee Gees’ - to not only acknowledge their Manx heritage, but also to record and release a version of the Manx traditional song ‘Ellan Vannin’. This was after decades of time in their careers when the world was convinced that the brothers were from either Manchester or Australia. But actually, Barry and the twins Maurice and Robin were born in Douglas on the Isle of Man. You will find photos of Bernie with the brothers and their mother Barbara at the end of the montage.
The Isle of Man is sadly lacking in tribute to the disco kings’ heritage, but after much campaigning by Bernie and, in recent years, his sister - my mother - Pauline Quayle DeHaven, a statue was finally erected in tribute to them on Douglas Promenade in 2021. Although very poor in health at the time, Bernie was able to attend the unveiling and was very emotional to see his friends immortalised at last. He passed away in September of that year.
