As the tech world continues to buzz with excitement over the artificial intelligence-powered chatbot ChatGPT, the business story surrounding the tool is more about what isn't known. Big tech companies in the US and China have rushed to announce their own similar AI tools, often referencing Microsoft-backed ChatGPT, while disclosing few details on their own projects.
ChatGPT’s ability to generate everything from poems to business strategies in a human-like conversation has taken the industry by storm in the last few months. People are using ChatGPT for homework and writing content, even children's books. In fact, you may not even know if this video was written by ChatGPT and that is how smart AI has become. It is mind boggling.
Especially for the common folks, we have only now been in direct contact with AI at such a large scale. And to be honest, people are enjoying it. But what does that mean? Well, that means future avenues of research, development and yes, COMPETITION!
In this specialized area of AI, companies both in the US and China are working hard to compete. OpenAI, a US startup, launched ChatGPT in November. The public interface quickly became popular for everything from homework help to strategy development. Now, China is in the race to make their own versions of AI interfaces sooner than later.
As the race to develop cutting-edge AI tools continues, it remains to be seen who will come out on top. With big tech companies in the US and China competing in this specialized area, it's clear that the potential of ChatGPT and similar tools is vast, and the possibilities for businesses and consumers alike are endless. However, China always shocks with their growth and potential to outdo others. So, what is China up to in the AI world?
The Chinese AI Game
In the background of ChatGPT and other AI modules, Chinese tech industry has also been busy working on their own AI software. In fact, their adventures in the AI world are not new or a response to ChatGPT, but they have already been venturing into AI world for a long time. ChatGPT’s introduction will only speed up the race. DingTalk
One of these examples is DingTalk, developed by Alibaba. DingTalk is a communication and collaboration platform that uses AI to automate certain tasks and improve productivity. It has become particularly popular among Chinese businesses and organizations. Founded in 2014, in four years it became one of the world's largest professional communication and management mobile apps in China with over 100 million users.
Baidu Brain
Remember, back in 2020, when Baidu’s CEO revealed two virtual avatars of him and a TV anchor on stage in Baidu’s annual World Summit? Well, three years later, it has advanced a lot more than these effortlessly smooth talking virtual figures.
Chinese Baidu search engine already uses AI to power its responses. Baidu Brain is a suite of AI-powered tools and services developed by Chinese tech giant Baidu. It includes a range of products, from speech recognition and image analysis to autonomous driving systems.
Now wait, the most interesting bit is this; Baidu claims that: ‘Knowledge graphs are the building block for computers to develop a cognitive understanding of the world. Baidu Brain 6.0 has a large-scale knowledge graph with over five billion entities and 550 billion facts.’
Does that sound similar to how ChatGPT works? It is!
