Phase 26: Off Grid Living in Remote Interior Alaska: Spring Priority # 2 is the Poo 💩
In this phase we finally burn the poo poo! In remote Alaska living on a rocky ridge we can’t dig a deep hole by hand all too well, so we chose to get back to the founding ways of life picking up in interior Alaska and use a 55 gallon drum barrel and burn it in the Spring.
Due to the threat of wildfires in Alaska, spring burning with adequate snow coverage is the only option. We also wanted to decrease the amount of interest a bear may have in tearing open our outhouse for a sniff around.
This proved more challenging then we thought as it was frozen solid. Burning ice is not easy. It took a few tries and in the end we still had remnants but it was much less, but we ran out of time and needed to be present to monitor it.
