How can schools prevent and address peer-to-peer sexual harassment?
A year ago Ofsted published their review into sexual abuse in state and independent schools, finding that harmful sexual behaviours are so common in schools that young people perceive them to be normal. Research by The Girl Guiding Association found that over two thirds of girls have experienced sexual harassment in schools. In addition, Ofsted finds that students feel the RSHE curriculum does not give them the requisite information and support and many teachers feel underprepared to deliver this learning.
This discussion at the Festival of Education 2022 examined what schools can do to address sexual harassment, and what support they need from other organisations.
