With the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, several media outlets and journalists are facing the ire of the protesters, who have accused them of driving the Hasina government’s propaganda and muzzling the voices of the people.
Newslaundry spoke to independent journalists and those connected with prominent independent news outlets to understand the undercurrents on the ground and the reason for the people’s anger.
“It is pent-up anger of many years… People have been seeing that the media has been operating as the regime’s propaganda machine and spokesperson. Many lawsuits lodged against independent outlets,” said Zaved Hussain of Prothom Alo.
She also speaks with prominent Bangladeshi writer, thinker, photo journalist, cultural icon and Time Person of the year 2018 Dr. Shahidul Alam on the power of art in revolutions, #Bangladesh #StudentsProtests, #indobangladesh relations, #freedomOfPress and the road ahead.
Photojournalist and cartoonist Shahidul Alam, a known critic of Hasina, said, “What the students had wanted was dignity. But that was denied.”
