Richard Wagner
Prelude to the Opera "Die Meistersinger"
Sergei Rachmaninoff
Piano Concerto No. 2
Piotr Tchaikovsky
Piano Concerto No. 1
Two of the most popular piano concertos of all time, which are rarely, if ever, heard in concert: Rachmaninoff's Second Piano Concerto with its characteristic opening piano chords, which almost spill over into jazz. And then Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto, whose piano tirades, after a threatening orchestral opening, enter the door of destiny even more powerfully, even more aggressively. So much legendary music requires a fitting yet contrasting prelude! Although Wagner's opera The Mastersingers of Nuremberg is his only truly "comic" opera, the overture alone—appropriate to its subject matter: the art of singing—is full of erudition, condensations, and simultaneities. A program of works that are essential to know, works that (and can) accompany one throughout one's life.
