[Abstract]

This presentation will introduce the audience to the basics of how the electric grid and other industrial infrastructure is controlled and monitored with Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) or Industrial Controls Systems (ICS). Then we will discuss some of the cyber security aspects of these systems, including common ICS vulnerabilities and the work to address them.

Andrew Murray is a 20+ year consulting engineer in the SCADA and communication fields for electric utilities. His career highlights include Y2k system impact studies (anyone remember Y2k?), design, programming and commissioning of SCADA systems for electric municipals, substation communications projects, incorporating cyber security into existing systems, and training utility personnel on substation operations and protection principles. His more recent tasks have involved management of compliance programs, including NERC Critical Infrastructure Protection (NERC-CIP), for multiple municipal electric utilities. Mr. Murray recently completed his Masters in Cybersecurity, cyber-physical systems concentration, at Georgia Institute of Technology. During which he interned at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. There he investigated the application of zero trust in electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Andrew is a registered professional engineer in MA and holds a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) certification.
