TUTORIAL: DIY Filters (for your matte box)
I recently got the Tilta Mini Matte Box and while I am really enjoying it so far I think one of the issues a lot of us are going to have is that while an entry level matte box like this might only be $100, a decent 4x5.65” ND filter can cost $200 or more, and if you want a set of them you could easily spend nearly $1,000 on that set. In this vide we're going to make our own DIY ND filters (and a few more kinds) for a fraction of that price.
MATERIALS:
a piece of thick card stock (or some sort of fairly rigid paper, you could use foamcore if you wanted but more on that later on in the video) from your local craft/hobby store
an ND filter sheet (you can buy these solo: https://amzn.to/37olHkF ; or as part of a lighting filter pack: https://amzn.to/3aHtrQP)
scissors or a knife
gaff tape
Something to consider when making your own ND filters is that these are a great, inexpensive option to start out with, but few things can replicate the real deal pro glass ND filters (that are durable, have no color shift, and will actually help protect your lens).
