Understanding what makes people bicycling for transportation is key for sustainable development. It is commonly accepted that building bicycle-dedicated infrastructure can increase the share of bicycling trips. However, other factors related to attitudes, preferences, social influences, socio-economic status, and perception of other transportation modes can affect the decision of choosing the bicycle as a transportation mode.
This publication of SUR-Research Center in Travel Behavior & Society Journal identifies the influences and motivations of bicycle adopters in Bogotá, Colombia. Based on interception surveys, and statistical analyses. The main outcome of this paper is the identification of factors that should be taken into account to promote bicycling besides the infrastructure implementation.
