Thanks to @NVIDIAGeForce and Simplex from @MKwadratPodcast, I was given the opportunity to test the most advanced cloud gaming technology for free: GeForce Now Ultimate. Of course, the first thing I checked was its performance on Steam Deck.

Unfortunately, there is no official app yet that can be downloaded from the Steam or Discover store, and the unofficial versions are unfortunately not very good – they have issues with image scaling and do not support hardware video acceleration, resulting in poor performance. Fortunately, cloud gaming is very easy to use via a web browser. While we don't have as many configuration options as with the native Windows app, the user experience and gameplay quality remain exceptionally high. I'll be using Google Chrome in this article – if you've tried Xbox Game Pass Cloud, the installation process is completely similar.
GeForce NOW is the most advanced and optimized cloud gaming option, allowing for comfortable gameplay even in highly dynamic games at the highest graphics settings with ray tracing.
The image quality is fantastic, and the latency doesn't differ significantly from native gameplay. Furthermore, after extensive testing, I find that playing at 60 FPS on GeForce Now is significantly more enjoyable and responsive than at 30/40 FPS on Steam Deck.
Another advantage of Nvidia's offering is the ability to play many titles completely unavailable on SteamOS, including Fortnite, Lost Ark, and The Crew 2.
The games launch very quickly, don't take up any disk space, and there's no need to wait for updates. The only real requirement is a stable and sufficiently fast internet connection –
for Steam Deck and 1280x800 resolution, the minimum speed is 15Mbps, but in my experience, 25Mbps guarantees the best gameplay quality.
GeForce Now offers several subscription plans, and if you're not convinced you'll enjoy this type of gameplay or that your internet connection will be able to guarantee smooth gameplay, I recommend checking out the free version. It has numerous limitations, the most bothersome of which are very long queues.
This plan also has an hour-long session limit and doesn't provide access to a server with the most powerful components and Ray Tracing support. The free plan is a great way to test the service, but the limitations are tedious, and I can't imagine serious gaming with it.
The next tier is Priority. Here, queues are extremely rare, and wait times usually don't exceed a few minutes. The server is significantly more efficient and features an RTX processor, ensuring gameplay at 1080p resolution and 60 frames per second. The session limit is a whopping 6 hours, so it shouldn't pose any problems. This plan seems ideal for Steam Deck, as it's currently impossible to achieve a stable connection at higher resolutions due to device limitations.
I tried playing on an external display at 120Hz, but while Steam Deck detected the refresh rate correctly, the GeForce Now browser version was limited to 60 frames per second. A Priority membership costs 49 PLN per month, and if you opt for a six-month subscription, the fee will be 249 PLN.
