If you have been prescribed laser treatment for varicose veins (EVLK), varicose vein treatment begins with a consultation with a phlebologist and an ultrasound examination of the veins of the lower extremities. If the ultrasound reveals that large veins are affected (trunk varicose veins), laser removal (endovenous laser coagulation) is prescribed.
What is endovenous laser coagulation (EVLK)?
This is a modern, minimally invasive method for treating varicose veins. It is based on the principle of thermal damage to the vein affected by varicose veins. In other words, the laser essentially injures the vein, causing fibrosis (overgrowth) within it, which subsequently leads to its complete resorption into the tissue.
How to prepare for EVLK?
The EVLK procedure is performed under local anesthesia, without incisions or sutures, and does not require hospitalization. If the anesthesia is administered correctly, you won't feel the laser itself.
Preparation for the procedure doesn't require any special steps: you take a standard set of tests, which can be done right here at our clinic. We'll have the results the next day. If everything is fine, simply arrive on the scheduled date, and we'll begin.
Can I wait and not have the laser procedure yet?
The fact is that EVLT has its limitations. When choosing a treatment strategy for each individual case, we rely on anatomical and ultrasound criteria. Just because your veins are currently suitable for minimally invasive treatment doesn't mean they will always be this way. Progression of the disease will occur quickly, leaving phlebectomy as the only option.
What will happen after laser treatment for varicose veins?
Immediately after the laser procedure, you will be put on compression stockings, which you will need to wear until your follow-up examination (in 2-3 days). After the procedure, a brisk hour-long walk is recommended. Literally an hour and a half to two hours after entering the clinic, you'll be walking through the nearest park, with no hospitalization or mobility restrictions. Don't expect anything acute, abrupt, or extremely painful.
The terms "rehabilitation" or "recovery period" don't really apply to laser treatment, to be honest. After EVLK, it's recommended to take care of your legs, avoid injury, avoid overloading them with heavy objects, and limit visits to the steam room and sauna—all of this applies for a month after EVLK.
