Ten of Denver’s most talented bartenders are competing to create the most visually stunning garnish—and you can get in on the action! Try each of their cocktails at participating restaurants and bars leading up to the event, then cast your vote to advance six bartenders to the live finale. In this video, bartender Dustin Lawlor from Hop Alley in Denver shows us how to create a bold and rich cocktail called Jacobean. This cocktail draws inspiration from a classic scene in the movie Zoolander, where Jacobim Mugatu famously reacts to a foamy latte. At Hop Alley, we love to incorporate elements from iconic movies and music into our culinary creations.
To make this cocktail, you’ll need:
• 1 oz Mr Black
• 0.75 oz Cynar
• 0.25 oz Hoodoo Chicory Liqueur
• 1 oz Espresso Concentrate
Garnish: To enhance the cocktail’s richness with sweetness and spice, it is topped with black pepper-sweetened heavy cream, a dash of dehydrated citrus dust from orange peel scraps, and a hint of instant espresso powder.
Inspiration: Dustin’s garnish was inspired by the unforgettable scene with Jacobim Mugatu from Zoolander, bringing a playful and thematic element to the cocktail that aligns with Hop Alley’s atmosphere of drawing inspiration from classic movies and music.
The 6th Annual Garnish Games is a bartending competition in Denver presented by DiningOut Magazine and Diageo Brand Spirits, culminating with a live finale on August 4th, 2024, at Meow Wolf Convergence Station.
