This video reminds me of my earliest out of body experiences when I was no more than 3 or 4 years old. In a dream state I would effortlessly fly around my neighborhood above the rooftops looking down at the action in the yards, the walks, and on the streets during the latter half of the WWII when there were still horse drawn dairy wagons and recyclers walking the streets screaming out “rags and metal” looking to make a few bucks in tough times. What I was seeing from above was what I’d observed for years from my red rocking duck that was parked on the porch my mother would put me most days. From this vantage point I imagine those early out of body dream experiences were inspired by my first tastes of freedom, when I finally left the safety of my rocking duck and ventured off the porch to explore the neighborhood. Those early experiences set the stage for the rest of my life. I’ve never loved anything more than the freedom to explore at will. Musical free-play is one of the best vehicles to satisfy that urge because given the nature of music the possibilities are infinite. When I discovered video in the early 70s I immediately recognized it as a form of visual music that would satisfy my lust for unfettered exploration. Over the decades I can’t count the number of times I’ve left my body following one visual music experiment or another. This one takes me all the way back to the beginning. That’s fitting because I sense the end is not that far away.
