In his I have a dream speech, Dr. King paraphrased scripture from the old testament book of Amos,
But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.
But I ask you, where is this justice, this economic justice at a time in when 1% of our citizens own as much as the other 99%, when productivity is at an all- time high, real wages, what our money can buy is where it was 45 years ago.
In an America where company CEO’s earn 300 times that of those work there.
How does that contribute to a just economy?
In an America where technology, information and innovation are leading our economy, we still grapple with disgust, distrust, despondency and despair.
We live in a country where student loan debt is $1.5 trillion and where credit card debt is about the same..
Sadly we live in an America today where too many of those in public service are siding with rich the powerful the few to the detriment of the masses, the workers, the poor.
That is hardly a just economy and I could go on, but let me conclude with a suggestion.
We must embrace the fact that Economic Justice is our current journey, it’s the quest we find ourselves on at this very moment … it must be fought for, must be striven for, and it must be attained…we must achieve it and while there are no simple and quick solutions here are a couple of thoughts.
We start to achieve it when affluent and influential, fair minded people share their affluence and their voices.
We start to achieve it when enlightened corporate leaders embrace their responsibility to society speak out and do more.
When social and economic justice advocates and activists as well as civil rights and human rights leaders refuse to sit down and shut up. We all have a role to play.
We begin to achieve it when folk quit voting and acting against their self-interests
Those are just a few things but know this…
We cannot stop until justice, the opposite of poverty, rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.
