New Colossus, the poem at the base of the statue of liberty contains a passage that says, “give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to be free…send these, the homeless, the tempest-tossed to me…. What Happened? Lately all the rhetoric has been, protect our borders, build a wall, only send the best, the talented, the wealthy, the white! So, as many of us realize that that poem did not truly reflect 18th century America where Blacks were in slavery and natives were victims of genocide, America built a reputation as a melting pot, a place where everyone was welcome to contribute and benefit. America promoted this idealism throughout the world, while never admitting its own dark history and shortcomings. Is the statue in New York Harbor a symbol of Liberty, or a symbol of just another American lie.
