Godric's Hollow burns. Lily Potter's body lies cooling, James Potter dead at the stairs, and a one-year-old boy screams in his crib beneath a lightning-bolt scar. The magic happens exactly as it must. Voldemort's curse rebounds. The Dark Lord vanishes. Ancient protection settles into Harry's blood and bone. What changes is what comes after.
Dumbledore arrives with Hagrid. He turns to the giant man gently but with quiet finality.
Dumbledore: Hagrid. Leave us, please.
Hagrid(confused): But Professor, I—
Dumbledore: Please.
Hagrid hesitates, his enormous frame filling the doorway. Then he nods once and lumbers away into the dark. Dumbledore waits until his footsteps fade completely before he speaks again, his voice pitched toward the shadows at the far end of the room.
Dumbledore: You may come forward, Severus.
Another figure steps from the darkness. Severus Snape. His face is carved from stone, his hands steady at his sides, but his eyes are fixed on the place where Lily fell. His gaze avoids the child entirely.
Dumbledore: I must speak plainly. Lily's blood protection holds only if Harry calls Petunia Dursley's house his home. The magic is ancient. Absolute. If we break this condition, Voldemort will find the boy the moment he returns.
Snape(cold): Then find another solution. There are safe houses. Members of the Order with children of their own. People who might actually welcome him.
Dumbledore: None of them share Lily's blood.
Snape: Then use wards. Enchantments. Ancient protections...
Dumbledore: None as powerful as what she left him. You know this, Severus.
Snape(through his teeth): I know that you are asking me to leave her son with people who despise everything she was.
Dumbledore: Yes. I am. But I am also asking you to be his guardian. His instructor. To watch over him quietly, carefully, for as long as it takes. He returns to Privet Drive each summer to renew the protection. The rest of the year, he is yours to guide.
Snape: Mine. You make it sound like a gift.
Dumbledore: I make it sound like what it is. A responsibility. One I believe only you are suited to carry.
Snape: Flattery.
Dumbledore: Truth.
Snape turns away. His jaw tightens. When he speaks, it is barely above a whisper.
Snape: You ask me to spend years shaping him. Watching him grow into James Potter's image. His father's face staring back at me every single day.
Dumbledore: I ask you to protect Lily's son. As you swore you would.
The words land like a stone dropped into still water. Snape goes very still.
Snape(quiet): That is beneath you, Albus.
Dumbledore: Perhaps. But it is no less true.
Silence stretches between them. The baby whimpers in his crib. Snape still keeps his gaze fixed elsewhere.
Snape: And when someone discovers I am raising him? Lucius. The Ministry. Anyone with cause to question my loyalties. It unravels everything.
Dumbledore: Which is why no one will know. The arrangement remains between us alone. To the world, Harry Potter lives with his Muggle relatives. To anyone who asks, you remain exactly what you have always been.
Snape: You ask me to do this in complete secrecy. Without support. Without acknowledgement.
Dumbledore: Yes.
Another silence, longer this time. Snape exhales slowly through his nose. It falls short of agreement. For now.
Snape: Very well.
He says nothing more. Dumbledore lets the silence stand. He understands, as Snape does, that gratitude would be an insult. But before Snape can turn to leave, Dumbledore raises a hand.
Dumbledore: There is one more thing you must know, Severus. Before I place this child in your care. The prophecy. You heard only its beginning. There is more.
Snape stops. His back is still turned, but his shoulders tighten.
Dumbledore: "The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches, born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies. And the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not. And either must die at the hand of the other, for neither can live while the other survives."
