For a long time I never could figure out why my drums didn't quite groove like my favorite tracks that I listened to. I always thought it was some piece of gear I didn't have or some processor that made them pop. Turns out it's all about technique. In this video I'm gonna show you some various different methods you can use to get your drums not just triggering, but moving and talking with each other.
First we'll make a quick drum pattern on the Roland TR-8S and then use the Motion Record feature to get the drums sounding a bit more active. Then we'll use Reason 11's Drum Sequencer and UMPF Drum Machine and Max 4 Live LFO's to modulate various parameters of the drum samples. Finally, we'll use AudioThing's Hats plugin and create some additional movement with filter modulation and sidechain compression.
Now, you don't have to use all of these techniques at the same time- but if you employ even a few of them in your songs I think you'll find that your drums have a whole new layer of groove and movement once they're talking to each other and having a conversation.
