I visited Raw Nook LNR at Low Moor Bradford and I was struck by the abundance of The scarlet elf cup fungus Sarcoscypha austriaca, they were everywhere. I believe the reason was the recent heavy rains we have had as the species likes a damp habitat.
The Scarlet Elf Cup – A Woodland Wonder Worth Finding 🌿
Join me in the damp, mossy corners of the woodland floor as we search for one of nature’s most enchanting fungi—the Scarlet Elf Cup (Sarcoscypha austriaca). Though fairly widespread, it remains an uncommon treasure in Britain and Ireland, favouring high-rainfall areas with decaying sticks and branches, especially near ditches and stream banks.
🔍 How to Identify It
Look for bright scarlet, cup-shaped fruiting bodies with smooth inner surfaces and pale pink, finely hairy exteriors. These magical cups sit on very short stems and often appear in clusters on rotting wood in damp, shaded places.
🧚 Folklore & Imagination
Legend has it woodland elves sip morning dew from these crimson goblets. We like to imagine them filled with sloe gin or birch sap—tiny toasts to the forest’s hidden life.
🌳 Fungi & the Forest Web
While mushrooms have long been linked to decay and taboo, they’re vital to woodland health. Fungi like the Scarlet Elf Cup are part of vast underground networks that connect and support trees, plants, and wildlife. Their forms are as varied as their functions—some even collaborate with other species to create entirely new organisms.
