This is a 4K video that I recorded using OBS that was transcoded from the H.264 codec to the SVT-AV1 codec using ffmpeg. Even though OBS does offer the option to use the SVT-AV1 codec through it's program, I consistently ran into encoding overload errors as the codec can't seem to encode in real time, even on 1080p resolutions. While the original H.264 video has minimal loss in details (it's mostly noticeable in the grassy areas), SVT-AV1 seems to have preserved most of the details from an observers view, and artifacts a lot more cleanly than H.264.
For my ffmpeg conversion, I have used SVT-AV1 as AOM-AV1 is much slower and unbearable. Even with the speed improvements from SVT-AV1, this took a considerable amount of time. Some optimizations I have done was to use preset 4 and manually set the average bitrate to 8000 kbits/s, as in my first transcode attempt I noticed the bitrate was, at certain points, exceeding the originally recorded bitrate (20000 kbits/s). Most of the time it stayed around 8000 kbits/s and only going over in certain areas by not much. With these optimizations, this took about an hour for a successful transcode.
Unless AV1 gets hardware acceleration, I won't be using it to record my videos anytime soon. The best use case right now is if I want to lower the file size footprint of my videos, which this codec excelled. This codec reduced a 416 MB video by over half to 163 MB, showing the potential of AV1 for 4K content and video content in general.
