Digital Layout using Augment Reality (AR) || Digital layout, a widely adopted practice on construction and engineering projects, involves the use of CAD software, GPS systems, and other digital tools such as Total Stations (TS) to establish unparalleled precise position, orientation, and dimensions of any element on project sites. Essentially, it removes the guesswork and streamlines efficiency.
Can using AR improve the digital layout process?
We recently tested connecting our Trimble XR10 AR headset (the construction-ready version of Microsoft's Hololens2) to our Trimble RTS Total Station. Check out the summary of our experience below:
ADVANTAGES
1. In-context data: removes the challenge of navigating controller models on the worksite by giving an in-context view and understanding of the job.
2. Hands-free controls: AR communicates layout points visually through the headset without the need for a controller, keeping your hands free and making it easier to handle the survey pole whilst marking the point on the surface.
3. Efficiency: move from point to point faster by seeing exactly where your next point lies, selecting that point using hand prompts, and then receiving positional and accuracy feedback direct to your field of view.
DISADVANTAGES
1. Limited functionality: there is only a basic level of functionality and information available in the headset compared to the controller alternative.
2. AR controls: Controls are unfamiliar and sometimes overly complex, which can impact the efficiencies gained by the hands-free experience.
3. Site Safety: Projecting the model, layout points, and controller functions can inhibit your field of view, impacting your ability to move safely around the worksite.
Our conclusion?
We found that using the AR headset in conjunction with the tablet may result in a more effective workflow. Like any developing technology, we are certain of improvements over time where the adoption uptake will likely be driven by the release of solutions providing an engineering-grade accuracy and stability experience.
