Lesson #5 - Stern

Terms and concepts used:
Round stern - rounded or elliptical, with rotating frames and a streamlined contour at the sternpost.

Beam - a transverse beam supporting the deck, platform, and roof of the superstructure. Part of the ship's hull. Designed to provide rigidity to the floors, distribute the deck load to the sides, structure, and bulkheads, and provide transverse strength to the ship.

Transom - a beam that serves as the base of the aft section of the ship.

Countertimbers - timbers that form the above-water aft section of the ship.

Arcassette - a new type of transom stern, the structures of which were located on the transom, which were raised above the water.

The stern deck is the sloping section of the stern extending beyond the sternpost.

The ratchamber, also known as the wardroom, is a common room for dining, relaxing, or officers' meetings on a ship.

Helmport is a cutout in the lower part of the stern or sternpost of a ship for the passage of the rudder stock.

St. Barbara's Room is an aft cabin in the gundeck. It extends from the stern to the mizzenmast. This cabin received its name because it housed many of the artillery supplies under the charge of the constable.

Spitelburch is the upper beam of the flat stern, usually decorated with images of deities, city coats of arms, and other items.

A taffrail light is a vessel's stern light for navigation at night.
