A 2,000-Year-Old Roman Dam Saved a Town from Flooding in Spain: Here's How It Works
A historic 2,000-year-old Roman dam helped protect Almonacid de la Cuba, a village in Aragon, from the violent flood that hit Spain. Torrential rains, due to the DANA or “cold drop” phenomenon, hit Valencia and the surrounding areas on October 29, 2024, causing extensive damage, 222 deaths and 1,900 missing. But how is it possible that a Roman dam from the 1st century AD managed to block the flood of water and mud? And how did it help protect the town of Almonacid de la Cuba?
