The devil is an intriguing figure for many today. But surprisingly, even in times past, artists, in particular, found a strange fascination in him. Yet he is, it would seem, the personification of evil and all that is bad. What could be ambiguous about him? He is the embodiment of evil, the tempter of humanity, and the ruler of the underworld of torment. However, the concept of the devil is mired in a web of contradictions that reflect the contradictions of larger cultural, philosophical, and religious narratives. Moreover, the devil's nature is often marked by contradictions that reflect the complexity of the human psyche itself.
