The American Civil War is long over, yet its echoes can still be heard throughout the Commonwealth. One winter morning, two men arrive at a small ranch somewhere in South Dakota looking for work. The owner of the ranch, a Union side Civil War veteran by the name of Baker welcomes the Southern wayfarers, gives them a roof over their heads and an opportunity to earn a living. There's only one thing that haunts his mind - both of his new tenants bear little resemblance to simple hardworking travelers. Perhaps they have something to hide? Some time after, Baker discovers the deadly truth of these men's past.
Once one of his new handymen was well-known throughout the South as the valiant Colonel Pierce Montgomery, a loyal Confederate Army soldier who refused to surrender after the war ended. When his rebel band was defeated, he was officially declared dead, but as soon as it became clear that he had survived, one of the most experienced mercenaries of the new America, a former Pinkerton named Rufus Mayne, was thrown after him to quietly eliminate the rebel. After months of pursuit, Rufus catches up with Montgomery and his fellow soldier at Baker's South Dakota ranch, but after being sternly refused to give the Confederates away, he goes to the nearest town to encourage the local sheriff to round up the townsfolk and lynch the Southern rebels and those who harbor them.
