Pereyaslav Rada: The Story of (One?) Deception || History is Interesting
As a result of the anti-Polish uprising led by Bohdan Khmelnytsky, it supposedly gained independence, but it wasn't strong enough to achieve international recognition and consolidate its position. So, a protectorate was needed.
Three large powers claimed the Hetmanate's dependence on them in one way or another: the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (against whose oppression the Cossacks rebelled), the Ottoman Empire, and the Tsardom of Muscovy. Whom should they turn to for help? Ultimately, Khmelnytsky chose Moscow.
