Why did the Gadsden Purchase happen?
In 1853, James Gadsden, a U.S. diplomat, negotiated the purchase of a rather small piece of land from Mexico. On the surface, this Gadsden Purchase, coming in at 10 million dollars, doesn't make much sense, so why did it happen?
