The US Virgin Islands, a small group of islands in the Caribbean consisting of St. Thomas, St. John, St. Croix, and a few small surrounding islands, have belonged to the US since they were bought from Denmark in 1917. In total, the US paid $25 million for the islands, but what makes the islands so valuable, and why did the US want to buy them?
