We have encountered various nerves (“the yellow!”) along our playdough surgery journey, and have had conversations about why nerves are so important for surgeons to protect and preserve. In preparation for our next case, we discussed the role of nerves in providing sensory information from the skin to the brain - communicating the sensation of a light tickle, for example (a gentle tickle attack made a great demonstration!) 🤪 and pain (the basis for ‘numbing medicine’).

The hand ✋🏻 is a truly fascinating part of our bodies, whereby three key nerves work together to provide sensory function and movement. The median nerve travels from the arm to the hand through the carpal tunnel, and in some cases can become squeezed within this ‘tunnel’ causing numbness, tingling, and weakness of the first 4 fingers. Surgical release of the tunnel ‘roof’ (done under a wrist block) provides great relief by giving that nerve some room to breathe! 🗣
