Therefore, it is not surprising that ordinary dancing, the Americans were able to turn into grueling and cruel entertainment for the crowd.
Dance marathons, or “poor man’s nightclub,” as they were called, emerged in the early 1920s as an innocent hobby, along with contests for the largest number of pies eaten.

On March 30, 1923, the first official dance marathon was held, where Alma Cummins set a record - she danced non-stop for 27 hours, changing 6 partners.
Her achievement attracted public attention to her and inspired others, primarily women. The events took place in many cities and drew crowds of spectators. It was something like a modern reality show: dance marathons blurred the line between theater and life. The participants did everything on the dance floor: they ate, slept, and rested. It was only possible to go away to change clothes or for reasons of hygiene.
For dancing couples, participation in the marathon gave hope to receive a cash prize. But the majority danced for a piece of bread, since the participants were fed free of charge. Subject to the main rule: all participants were required to dance continuously.
