Devotees of Lord Muruga observe a 48-day fast to please Lord Muruga.
This is called Shasti Vratham. It is usually observed by couples who desire children.
Procedure for the fast:
The sixth day of the waxing moon phase, or Shukla Shasti, is best for the Vratham. First, take a bath and cleanse yourself. Then, do the following things on an empty stomach:
Install an idol or photo of Muruga at home.
Take two one rupee or five rupee coins and tie them in a new white cloth smeared slightly with turmeric powder.
Keep the coins (tied in the cloth) in the Pooja room. This is known as Mudupu.
Pray to your Kuladevta/ family deity, asking for progeny blessings.
Chant the Subramanyaswami Ashtothram (108 Sacred names/Mantras).
