Skanda Shasti Fasting is dedicated to Lord Muruga. Sashti is the 6th day of the lunar fortnight in the Hindu calendar.

It occurs during the waning and waxing lunar phases.

The Shasti that occurs during the waxing Moon phase in Ashwin month (Oct- Nov) is Skanda Shasti.

On this day, Muruga killed the demon Soorapadman.

Skanda Sashti Vratham is observed for 6 days, from the first day after the New Moon of Diwali to the 6th day of Shasti tithi.

Each of the six days is spent worshipping Muruga by reciting the glory of Muruga from the scriptures, visiting Muruga temples, observing Vrat, and performing Pooja.

Devotees observe a partial or complete fast for Skanda Shasti.

Fasting Procedure
Fasting begins at sunrise. It is broken the next morning at sunrise after praying to Surya Dev.

After taking a bath, clean the house and the Pooja room.

Choose a picture or idol of Muruga for worship.

Light a ghee lamp and offer Naivedya like sweet Pongal. Light incense sticks and perform Arati with camphor.

Sandal paste, rose water, kumkum, turmeric, flowers, etc., should be used during the Pooja.

Do Abishekam for Muruga`s Vel/Lancel with scented rose water or clean water. This brings one great merit.

Muruga used the Vel to kill Soorapadman. Worshipping this divine weapon can erase your bad karma.

Spend the day thinking spiritual thoughts and reciting the glory of Muruga to purify the mind.
All activities should be centered on Muruga.

Fasting is very important during the six days. It is not just about avoiding food but also about thinking positive thoughts.

Fasting removes negative emotions like anger, passion, and impatience. It also eliminates toxic wastes in the body.

Fasting helps realize Muruga in oneself. It also bestows immense merit, eradicates sins of past lives, and grants your wishes.

The fast can be a partial or complete fast. Some take only one meal on each of the six days.

Some take only milk, fruits, and liquids. Only sattvic food is allowed.

Non-vegetarian food is forbidden, and some people even avoid onions and garlic.

Most devotees who observe the fast visit a Murugan temple and participate in the Pooja.

Recite Skanda Shasti Kavacham, read and listen to stories about Skanda, read the Skanda Purana, and recite Subramanya Bhujangam by Adi Sankara.

One should do meditation, avoid telling lies, and shun greed, malice, and envy to discipline the mind during the fast.

End the fast on the sixth day, which is the day of Soorasamharam.

The following day is Thirukalyanam, the marriage of Muruga and Devasena, the daughter of Indra.

Astrological Remedy
Muruga is the presiding deity of Chevvai/Mars.

People with Mangal Dosha or Mars afflictions in their birth charts can get relief if they observe SkandaShasti Vratham.

Worshipping Muruga gives one courage and confidence.
