How to tongue on the saxophone
In this video, I will show you how to tongue on the saxophone.
Understanding how to tongue can be a little overwhelming and confusing in the early stages.
The tongue is a muscle (an organ actually, ahah) that needs to be trained, and as with any type of strengthening training, you need some time to see improvement.
Don't forget to blow air when you are tonguing. If there's no air through the saxophone, tonguing won't work—this is a very common issue with students.
Remember to:
1) Practice with the neck only
2) Aim for a light touch on the reed
IMPORTANT NOTE: For those advanced or pro players who watch this tutorial, please be aware that I am not advising to tongue with the tip of the tongue.
I repeatedly say to imagine or think about using the tip of the tongue to help achieve a light touch. This is a visualization technique.
This method is very useful for those students who are learning how to tongue, and it does help in producing a smoother attack.
Tonguing with the tip would obviously be wrong and bad teaching.
