The Woodland Cultural Center is on the grounds of the former Mohawk Institute Indian Residential School. It is one of only a handful of residential school buildings still left standing in Canada. It is the closest residential school to Oakville North-Burlington, located only 60km to the South West. The school is a physical reminder of the legacy of assimilation imposed upon indigenous children in Canada. The funding announced earlier this will help the Woodland Cultural Center become the first Canadian Museum of Conscience and it is critical to the important work being done by Six Nations of the Grand River to build a national resource to support public education and act as a centre for healing for the community.
