It has been two days since I ran away. I've been moving around a lot. I couldn't sit still because I was afraid someone was going to see me. Luckily, nothing came up on the news about me. Not yet anyway. I've been stalking out the papers regularly to make sure. I have just been so nervous that I can barely sleep. Tonight, I was sleeping in a playground tunnel. I had no idea what time it was, but it started to rain. And it kept raining. Great, I thought. This would happen to me. I deserve it. I deserve everything that gets thrown my way. I put myself in this position. Maybe I should turn myself in... But I couldn't. I was too scared. I was on the run. It needed to stay that way.
It must have been a few hours later when the sun came out. I groaned and crawled out of the tunnel. I needed to escape before someone saw me. I ran a few blocks until I found a clothing store. I bit down on my bottom lip. I've been wearing sweats for the past two days, maybe I should change.. But what would I wear? Alicia was a tomboy, Selena had to be different. I guess the new me had to be a girly girl. I slowly walked in and right away one of the sales girls gave me a dirty look. I sighed as I went over to the shorts and looked through them. It seemed like pastel colored shorts were in, so I picked out a light green pair. I then walked over to the tank tops and picked out one that was white and had green polka dots on it. I shrugged. This was the best I could do.
As I was walking up to the counter to pay, I saw a tiny makeup section. I didn't know if I should stop, but I figured I must since I was technically a girly girl now. I didn't wear too much makeup, so I didn't know what to pick. After a long, hard decision, I decided on makeup that would bled in with my skin color. Natural makeup, I guess people would call it. I quickly grabbed it and hurried to the counter. I have already been here long enough.
The same girl who gave me the dirty look was the girl checking me out. Surprisingly, she was actually nice. "I'm going to be honest," she said, "when I first saw you come in, I thought for sure that you were a poor little girl who ran away from home. But now after seeing your sense of fashion, I like it."
I faked a smile. I didn't really know what to do or say. I have never been in this situation before. It was time to put my thick Mexican accent back in action. "Oh, well thank you. In all honesty, I'm not from Minnesota, I'm from...." I paused for a split second. Where was I from? Then it hit me. "I'm from Mexico." Of course I wasn't, but I had to make it seem like I wasn't from the United States at all.
The girl nodded as she put my stuff in a bag and handed me a receipt. "That's pretty cool," the girl smiled warmly. "I'm Miley, by the way. And your total is $24.73."
I smiled slightly as I gave the girl $25. If I wasn't on the run, I probably would have stayed and chatted with her, but right when she gave me my change, I grabbed my bag and dashed towards the door. Now, I needed to find a coffee shop or something. I looked all over the place for one, but I couldn't find anything. I was in downtown Minneapolis and there was nothing. How was that possible?
Finally, after what seemed like forever, I found a small coffee shop. I went inside and looked around until I found the restroom when I hurried to it. I took my sweats off and changed into the shorts and tank top I just bought. After that, I washed my face before applying makeup. I groaned. Why did I have to do what I did? Why was this happening to me?
I took a deep breath and looked at myself in the mirror. With different hair, different style, and makeup, I looked like a completely different person. I stuffed my sweats into my backpack and counted my money. I only had one hundred dollars left. Of course I had my credit card, but I wasn't going to risk using that. Since I didn't plan on staying in Minnesota, I had to be wise about spending money.
I swallowed hard as I walked out of the bathroom. I glanced over at the big clock. It was 10 in the morning. I should probably eat.. But then again, I should probably wait since I'd only be eating one meal today. I hurried out of the coffee shop so I wouldn't be tempted to buy anything.
I began walking to the newsstand. This was my least favorite part of the day. So far I haven't turned up in the news, but it was only a matter of time. And of course, right when I got there, my heart stopped. I couldn't breathe. I couldn't move. I couldn't even blink. My eyes were locked on the front page. On the front page, there I was. But it was an old school picture of me. I looked so innocent in that picture. The headline said "Alicia Paulina Cuesta-Martinez: On The Loose." My breathing picked up by now. But I was beyond scared. I didn't know where to go. I had to get out of here fast.
