Slow Twitch vs. Fast Twitch Calf Muscle
🏃🏽♂️ The Soleus is your deeper calf muscle.
This muscle has a larger percentage of slow twitch muscle fibers.
🚴🏽♂️ It’s important for aerobic and muscular endurance based activities.
The Gastrocnemius is your fast twitch calf muscle.
📈 This muscle is preferentially trained with the standing calf raise.
I typically recommend to bias more work toward straight leg calf raise variations, since they target both calf muscles.
💨 Also, the straight leg calf raise is closer to the position that we’re typically in for running, sprinting, and other sport movements likely making the functional carryover a bit better.
