Despite the weak metallic properties of copper, it reacts quite quickly with mercury salts, displacing mercury in free form from them. The surface of the copper must be absolutely clean. If the reaction is carried out long enough, there will be practically no mercury salts left in the solution, and thus it is possible to neutralize mercury-contaminated solutions.
