Soundscapes musicians at the Carver Elementary Daily Program worked with Joe Hamm for 8 consecutive weeks to write student-initiated music compositions, influenced by our favorite foods. Westley Benson, Soundscapes' Wind Band Director, worked closely with his class to compose music that reflected the students tastes, preferences, and collaborated with Joe to stay inspired and write music that felt both authentic and challenging.
Music composition is a critical component of a well rounded music education experience, and empowers students with the opportunity to make choices, solve problems, and let curiosity and experimentation guide their learning. The collective music composition experience and process presents unique challenges and teaches many lessons in democratic and constructive collaboration, amidst the musical and technical necessities of writing and performing music.
