In this video we demonstrate how the voltage sensitivity of a capacitor can be measured using the Bode 100 VNA. We use a Picotest J2130A DC-Bias injector to apply a DC voltage to the device under test and measure the impedance of the capacitor from 100Hz to 40MHz. The device under test is a ceramic capacitor with a nominal capacitance of 100µF. The measurement shows that the capacitance is strongly influenced by the DC voltage applied to the capacitor. Applying 5V to the 25V capacitor reduces the effective capacitance to 33µF which is only one third of the nominal value. It is very important to consider this effect when designing e.g. an output filter for a switched mode power supply.
