Church Records Tip: Birth and Baptismal Dates
One of the first things that an amateur genealogist researching their Filipino family tree will have to check is the way the dates of birth and baptism were understood by the friars and scribes in the records of their hometown. In some places, the dates of baptism and birth were both listed in the record, so that is the kind of record we all wish to see. But most only gave the birth of baptism and the number of days old the child was when baptized. In most instances, one just has to deduct the number of days from the date of baptism to get the birth date. However, some priests or scribes, or both, interpreted this differently. Some parishes started counting day 1 on the date of birth, so deducting the number of days from the date of baptism will not work. Maybe just a day difference, but it still matters to get the real birth date of our ancestors.
