Johnsrud Road in the Blackfoot River corridor has re-opened after a months-long resurfacing project. The heavily-used route runs parallel to the Blackfoot River 17 miles east of Missoula. This public access road surfacing project, which began construction work in mid-June, was funded by Federal Highways. Maintaining the road in its previous state required frequent maintenance and a high proportion of the Western Montana District’s overall road maintenance budget. In the past, traffic on the road also generated significant dust which negatively impacted to the recreation experience for users. The road is now chip-sealed and provides a smoother ride, is more durable, and will be easier to maintain.
