In the late 1930’s, Stalin ordered the construction of tunnels under the Dniper river in Kyiv, Ukraine. The Soviets were paranoid that the Germans would destroy the bridges, and cut off access to Kyiv.
There were to be 2 tunnels, and each one would be 6km in length and 35m below the river bed. The project was eventually abandoned when the Germans surrendered. In Kyiv, you can still see the remains.
